Assemblymembers Quirk, Chu and Kalra Introduce Resolution to Recognize Muslim Americans
SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Bill Quirk (D-Hayward), along with Assemblymember Kansen Chu (D-Fremont) and Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) introduced House Resolution 43 (HR 43) today to recognize the month of August 2017 as Muslim American Appreciation and Awareness Month.
“In light of everything occurring nationally and internationally, I felt it necessary to once again introduce a resolution to celebrate and recognize the many social, cultural, and economic contributions Muslim Americans have made in science, film, athletics, education, and other areas” said Assemblymember Quirk.
“The Muslim community is an integral part of what makes California great. As a progressive state, we adamantly promote tolerance, equality and inclusivity. For a group of people who contribute to the state’s economy and diverse cultural heritage, it is paramount to continue to support and stand by their side” stated Assemblymember Chu.
The majority of Muslim Americans within California and throughout the nation strive to promote peace and understanding between all faiths, identities, and nationalities while upholding those values and principles that define the American people. They have nonetheless been forced to endure harassment, assault, and discrimination. In the year 2015 alone, there were approximately 174 reported incidents of anti-Muslim violence and vandalism in the United States.
In 2016, Assemblymember Quirk became the first legislator in the country to introduce a resolution in recognition of Muslim Americans.
Assemblymember Quirk, Chu and Kalra will be presenting HR 43 during floor session on August 21, 2017.
Elected in 2012, Bill Quirk brings his PhD in astrophysics and career as an educator and scientist to the State Assembly. He is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials. He is also Chair of the Select Committee on California’s Clean Energy Economy. He is a member of the Agriculture, Public Safety, Revenue and Taxation, and Utilities and Energy Committees.
